INTRODUCTION#2
AL is not a derivative book, it is second to nothing. It is the source book from which all other hieratic texts derive. It cannot be read like other hieratic texts, it is not an instruction book of how to behave nor does it give a law in any ordinary sense. It is an initiatory text, that is, the more you work with it the more it will teach you, but the teaching is not in the words but in your reactions to those words. As you understand more of its mysteries so you will be tested further. If you fail your fate will be commensurate with the degree and type of failure you have experienced. To work with this book you must have the elements of a pure heart. The nature of this work is the nature of creation, not just of the universe but of everything contained within and without it. If you pass through its ordeals it will reveal to you all the mysteries.
The Book of the Law must not be read as an instruction book or a religious text it is an initiatory text. If one reads it it will begin by testing your moral integrity then it will have a go at your religion then it will attack your principles. If you pass these tests and still continue with the work that you recognise the thread of something in Al that you must follow, you will be compelled to study its Qaballa in English. The tests continue, first your basic honesty is tested to see if you will bend the numbers to fit an idea, there will be times when you discard the work in disgust only to pick it up again seemingly by coincidence to find it at a page that exactly reflects your thoughts, you are drawn in again you are again lured into the drama of magick. Sun Asc + Moon - Sun Horus Isis Osiris. All that is solar male is removed from Horus and Isis to give the pure female Isis she who is Virgin and yet mother of all.
It must be emphasised again and again that the Book of the Law is no ordinary text, to be read evaluated accepted or discarded. It is not possible to judge it, it will judge you. People with rigid and fixed ideas will be appalled by it. the liberal minded will recoil in horror at its attacks on the under privileged. Al cannot be read like this, the reader may read it again and again until he has some understanding of its shape. He will examine its ideas, with as little prejudice as possible until he sees beyond his own weakness. All his faults will be paraded before him as virtues and his mind will be confounded. The faults you find in Al are not in Al but in you. An example of this is ‘‘Compassion is the vice of kings’’, this would give the ignorant a field day and he would have failed one of the primary tests because later it states ‘‘these vices are my service ye do well’’etc. The Book of the Law is quite unique, there is no other book like it in the history of literature. It is not to be read and understood or not. The Book of the Law will create a dialogue with you. The more you read it and study it the more profound and searching that dialogue becomes. If it is read straight it is bound to horrify you, if it doesn’t there is either something seriously wrong with your moral sense or you are totally enlightened: the second proposition is extremely unlikely. Any real understanding of the book requires a knowledge of Qaballa mythology and a plethora of arcane knowledge consistent with someone who has made a study of the whole spectrum of occult literature and practice. The reader will always find a proposition within its verses that will horrify him or at least challenge him in some intimate way. He will either discard our little book and go on his way happy in the knowledge that it is a work of the devil or his curiosity will be aroused and to some it will be incomprehensible to others horrifying and to a small group of people, for them it has chosen - by this or that.
When you first read The Book of the Law you will find something or many things in the text that outrage you. There is always something in it to offend everybody. It is meant to be so. If you read this Book and nothing in it does offend you then throw it away because you’re either dead or you wrote it yourself. The point is that it is meant to challenge you the inner you, it should find out where you live and unsettle you. If you persist and are not put off then it will continue to challenge you. This is no ordinary Book, it is more like a computer program. When you read it, it sets to work on you to find out whether you are worthy to understand any of its mysteries. If you persist in spite of your natural revulsion then it will teach you the mysteries in accordance with your ability to come through its ordeals.
This is no dead letter philosophy. The Book of the Law is alive. The Gods are alive. Every word the Book says is true and every word is untrue. The dedicated student will find that his life will be altered by unseen hands. His life will be changed and moulded creating the ordeals necessary for him to understand the secrets concealed within its pages. These secrets are the key to eternity, not just the Universe but Eternity and everything contained within it. Nothing like the Book of the Law has ever appeared on Earth before it is unique. The Qaballa reveals layer after layer of truth until you stand before the final citadel and you realise once and for all that you have been reading Armageddon the revelation The Revelation The Great Book of Time. L.
The Book of the Law is a book like no other. It is wrong to assume that one must read it like any ordinary book because it is not an ordinary book. It is more in the nature of a computer programme and the reader is the computer. If one makes a serious study of Liber Al and its Qaballa it goes to work on its student. It interacts with every part of his being and if persisted in reveals through its ordeals a different kind of universe, a universe built on reason. One by one the Gods myths and archetypes are paraded before the reader not as dead letter ideas but as living entities with a function and purpose that is more alive today than at any other time in Earth’s history. In studying the book the individual is tested at every stage and with the successful passing of each test comes a realisation as a surprised secret and a readjustment to the real nature of the universe and the Self. Reading the Book of the Law is an initiatory process. There is always something in Al to offend and outrage everybody, if taken at face value many of the expressions in Al are totally unacceptable in a civilised society, and yet the outraged victim of our Holy Book will find a truth that is as equally true of him as another aspect of the Book outrages his sensibilities. Many will discard the Book at the first reading appalled by this statement or that, shocked an untenable concept or whatever, but reject it he will most certainly do. The student of the Qaballa although outraged by some of the Book’s sentiments will be held to it by its obvious Qaballistic form. The Qaballist knows not to take anything at face value, his training in Hebrew Qaballa will have taught him that.
The Qaballist is who the Book is written for, he who looks below the surface. To study Al one must always have an open mind, and if you haven’t got one persistent study of this book will most assuredly give you one. To begin with one is appalled yet fascinated, persistent study reveals secrets about the self and the universe that can be acquired in no other way. As each ordeal is overcome the miracle of the Book becomes more and more perceptible to the individual until at last he realises that what he has been studying is no mere dead letter text but the living word of God.
This is The Book, text of texts, mystery of mysteries, the Book in which all life on Earth is recorded. The history of the Universe and the secret of mankind. This is the Revelation. This is the Armageddon. The One Book that is father and mother of all other Books. Only once in 26,000 years does this Book appear. It is the blueprint of all Creation and yet it lives. The mystery of mysteries truth of truths Liber Al - The Book of The Law. Unless you are a serious student of the Mysteries this Book is not for you, it is for the seeker after truth. Many and terrible are the ordeals that must be undergone if one is to be made fit to understand the mysteries of creation, it is all here. The Holy Grail, Alchemical Gold, the Secrets of all religion magick and mysticism but you must be prepared to understand these mysteries and the Book of the Law prepares you for the secret knowledge and when you are ready it reveals its secrets in the most sublime succinct and incisive way possible, it interrupts the working of the Soul and changes it sometimes subtly at other times with a savagery that one can barely withstand and yet all the time it is guiding you testing you preparing you and initiating you. And to each in accordance with his ability will the mysteries be revealed until the final mystery, ‘‘The Life that Abideth in Light - Yea, the Life that Abideth in Light.’’
